Back to FAQ's main >

What is limestone?
Limestone is sedimentary rock consisting mostly of organic material such as skeletons and shells of marine creatures and sediments. This material settles to the bottom of water and over millions of years solidifies into solid rock.

What does limestone look like?
Limestone is a beautiful stone. Limestone is available in many different colours and shades - it comes in an array of pastel shades, ranging from the blues, grays to tans. Limestone can be also found in dark blacks which occurs when there is a high content of organic material. There is a high content of iron oxides when yellows and browns are prominent. There tends to be a lot of veining, streaking and speckling on the surface of the tiles.

How durable is limestone?
Limestone is strong, hard wearing, and sturdy.

How do I maintain limestone?
Limestone should be resealed on a regular basis (see fixing and sealing FAQ's). Cleaning can be done by steaming the tile or using a special neutral limestone or stone cleaner. Do not use regular soap as it will dull the tile leaving a film behind. Worn vacuum cleaners with metal or plastic attachments can scratch the tile.

Can I use limestone in my kitchen?
Limestone is subject to surface changes or damage from kitchen acids including citrus juices, vinegars, mustards etc. Some of the more porous limestone's can be subject to stains if unsealed.

What should I consider in using limestone?
You should always use cleaners and sealers designed for use with natural stone products, preferably for that particular stone.
