Travertine Tumbled & Aged |
Travertine Factselow Travertine is a terrestrial sedimentary rock formed by the precipitation of carbonate minerals from geothermally heated hot springs. This means travertine is derived from limestone that has been heated and pushed through the earths crust by hydraulic pressure to form travertine stone. Travertine has a layered appearance also it has many holes which occur naturally from water action. These holes in the travertine can be filled in at the factory or left unfilled allowing for a selected colour grout to be used to fill. Travertine surface can be honed or tumbled and travertine has an earth coloured tone. If travertine is tumbled the surface is roughly honed and the edges are worn and slightly rounded and occasionally chipped, this process is to give the travertine stone an appearance of being aged – also known as travertine aged stone. The maintenance of travertine tumbled stone is much lower as scratches and wear will enhance the appearance of travertine stone. This effect is done by placing the travertine stone into a large vat with abrasives and sand which then gets shaken until the effect has been achieved – also know as travertine tumbled. |
